The boys in the newsroom have a running bet

One of the perks of my job is that when a police chase gets going good, there’s usually a satellite feed on it in no time. While those at home might just catch “cut-ins” or :15 of highlights later on, I get to watch it live. This has led to some so-so endings, to a guy getting shot by the cops as he tried to flee, a guy squaring off trying to fist fight a cop, and any number of flips, rolls and crashes to put some life into the work day.

In the past three days, Texas has blessed us with two good ones.

Friday, a guy robbed a dry cleaner in Houston and put on quite the impressive driving display (the video package with the annoying reporter doesn’t do it justice, really) before splashing down in a creek two or so hours later.

Today, a guy stole a couple cars, then took a woman and her semi hostage, and made her drive through Dallas for hours on end with no front tires. From the reports that he was suicidal and “not going to come out voluntarily”, it’s a miracle this woman (and her dog) got out alive. Twenty bucks has her on Oprah for November’s sweeps.

And we’ve finally had a mystery solved. Apparently, the “stick of butter” Sesame Street sketch was a girl, but there was a similar “remembering” sketch that was a little boy (complete with pimp-type character that may or may not be Isaac Hayes).

Thanks to Jeanne in the original post’s comments for that one.

  1. One of the few things I miss about working in news is the live satellite feeds of police chases.

It was nice, the whole newsroom dropping everything they were doing to watch the chase, no matter how long. It doesn’t get that exciting in state government.
